ABOUT SHAWN EVANS

Shawn joined MASS Design Group as a Principal in 2022 through MASS’s strategic partnership with AOS Architects. Shawn was the Principal-in-Charge of the Santa Fe office of AOS Architects as well as the firm’s Director of Preservation and Cultural Projects. His leadership guided AOS Architects to win the AIA New Mexico Firm of the Year Award for 2021. During his 27 years at AOS, his significant projects include preservation and housing work at Ohkay Owingeh and Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo; museum master plans, renovations, and expansions at Eastern State Penitentiary and the Penn Museum in Philadelphia; higher education projects at Penn, NMSU, UNM, SMU in Taos, and St. John’s College in Santa Fe; a large expansion of Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm in Albuquerque; preservation projects at the Palace of the Governors, Oppenheimer House, and D.H. Lawrence Ranch; and a new net-zero affordable housing project in Santa Fe, Siler Yard Arts + Creativity Center. A graduate of Texas A&M, Shawn received a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. A frequent speaker on heritage and museums, he has presented at many conferences including: ATALM (2022, 2019, 2018, 2013), NY State Preservation Conference (2020), NM Assoc. of Museums (2020), Dismantling Preservation (2020), ReVisioning Santa Fe (2020), Pecha Kucha Santa Fe (2020), Alexander Girard: Design x Culture (2019), Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit (2019), IFMA-NM (2019), NMIF (2018, 2017), MAAM (2018, 2011, 2008), Texas A&M Annual Historic Preservation Symposium (2017), APTI (2016), SFAI14•••15), NPCE (2015), Building Creative Communities NM (2014, 2015), NAISA (2014), EarthUSA (2013), NM Rural Forum (2013), NJHT (2012), CO Saving Places (2012). His work has been exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum (2016-17) and during the Venice Biennale (2018).He has taught and lectured at Temple, Penn, and UNM. A recipient of the AIA Philadelphia Young Architect Award in 2004, Shawn received the James Marston Fitch Mid-Career Fellowship in 2011. He is accredited by APT as a \"Recognized Professional\" and by the FAIC as a an approved building assessor, and is listed on the NM-SHPO Directory of approved consultants. Shawn has been selected as one of three architects to train tribal leaders in the planning of cultural centers through the ATALM “Culture Builds Communities” program, taking place throughout 2020-22.
