About Shashank Chandrasekaran
I’m a 25 year old electrical engineer with a masters in electrical and computer engineering from U of M. I have worked on multiple utility scale solar projects, up to 900MW. I am working on substation design, protection and control schemes, and SCADA communications. I have experience modifying existing substation designs and selecting new equipment. I worked with the senior engineer on replacing the revenue meter from SEL 735 to ION 8650. I worked on upgrading the RTAC from SEL 2240 to SEL for a cogeneration site (solar + wind). I have experience with PVsyst on optimizing the design of the solar plants given the inverters, trackers, available land, and panel modules. I am also the lead project manager for the selection, installation, and integration of an overlay SCADA system. This $1.5M project will provide remote control and monitoring of renewable assets to the operators. This software also includes a web-based solution which allows operations to view advanced analytics and reports on certain metrics. I worked with multiple groups within the company to come with a project charter, a formal RFP with functional and technical requirements, a scorecard to evaluate the vendors’ response, and a decision document to finalize the vendors and get approval from the stakeholders. Previous work experiences include projects on energy storage (lead acid, lithium-ion) and power system studies (novel load flow studies performed on standard distribution networks). I had worked on designing and modeling a standard 12V lead acid battery with a simple thermal model for the battery temperature. I had also worked on passive cell balancing for a lithium-ion battery pack. The imbalance in the SOC and cell voltage were caused due to the cell-to-cell differences in the module configurations. I have also worked with a sub contractor as an underground cable testing and commissioning engineer. I was tasked with performing LV/HV (AC) sequential tests and partial discharge tests on 33kV and 66kV cables. Once the cables were commissioned they were sent to the EPC for inspection and acceptance.
