About Sharon Wilcox

As a cultural geographer and conservation social scientist, I seek to understand how people interact with, communicate about, and value wildlife and wild places. I advocate for culturally-situated practices to connect communities with sustainable futures, incorporating social values with scientifically informed conservation practices. I have dedicated much of my career to the study, conservation and restoration of the native wild cats that call the U.S-Mexico borderlands home, including the jaguar, jaguarundi, and ocelot. I serve as the Senior Southwest Representative for the environmental nonprofit organization Defenders of Wildlife, where I lead the organization\'s ocelot conservation program in the U.S. and serve on the the organization\'s jaguar conservation team.I am the co-editor of the book \"Historical Animal Geographies\" and I have written a number of scientific articles, book chapters, and essays examining contemporary and historical interactions of humans and wild cats in the U.S-Mexico borderlands. My work has been featured in National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, Nature, Scientific American, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Newsweek, and on National Public Radio. My research has received support in the form of grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Science Research Council, and the Smithsonian Institution.
