ABOUT SHANTANU GOTMARE

As a member of the most distinguished branch of the Indian civil services, I serve both national and state governments and have core skills on development policy making and implementation, managing multi billion budgets and resource allocation, managing multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholder engagements. In my current job since 2014 as the chief of staff of the Union Minister with portfolios spanning coal, mines, power and new and renewable energy, I have the rare opportunity of contributing to complex policy making process which fine balances the development needs of India with environmental imperatives including mitigating and adapting to climate change. This meant having a deep understanding of the drivers of India’s energy needs, the various competing demands and the energy policy making. In the past, I have led and mentored teams to achieve excellence in public services delivery across departments ranging from social development to physical infrastructure. As Deputy Commissioner of a district, I have devised and delivered high-impact programs through creative planning, strategic target-setting and timely delivery of goals. As Chairman of about 200 committees involving multiple district heads of departments, I have first hand experience in negotiating complex relationships and aligning interests for achievement of strategic objectives. I added international dimensions to my policy experience in Princeton University deepening my skills of negotiation, program and policy evaluation, economic analysis, risk analysis and strategic thinking. At Princeton, I also did a specialized certificate in Energy Policy focused on renewables growth, issues in its integration and sustainable growth. It built upon my prior experience of leading high-performing teams, executing policies, creating and implementing innovative programs and managing finances.
