About Shankeri Vijayakumar
I am an MPH student at Yale University and hold a BA (Hons with High Distinction) in Health Studies and Sociology from the University of Toronto. For the summer of 2024, I will be a Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) Leadership in Global Health Fellow in which I will be working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on systems-based approaches for health and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) acceleration. My background in social science theories and research methodologies has made me passionate about using empathetic listening and storytelling to understand human experiences and drive inspired change. My extensive experience conducting and leading equity-centered design thinking and qualitative research projects and teams fostered an enthusiasm for utilizing human-centered research methods to connect with people to gain nuanced understandings of their experiences in the world and inform meaningful solutions. My methodological interests include ethnographic, participatory, and community-based approaches. My public health research and practice interests include building trust in public health systems, health equity, social innovation, and systems thinking. The common thread through my work experiences and interests is a passion to engage with complex problems with a lens that is analytical, intersectional, and creative. Through my work, I am committed to tackling wicked problems in public health to advance health equity locally and globally through innovative, human-centered methods.
