Experience

1. Senior Director of Animal Care

   Akron Zoo

   Sep 2021 — Present

   Akron-based 50-acre zoo with 100 species and animals, and 400K annual visitors. Oversee Animal Care Department and six zoo managers including curators, behaviorist and registrar, and budget of $5.7M. Manage annual budget, capital projects, and institutional collection plan, and serve on committees including Incident Command Team (ICT), Continuing Education Committee, and Staff Wellbeing Committee. Manage Akron Zoo’s Institutional Collection Plan (ICP). Improved engagement and communication with union staff members by leading department’s implementation of performance improvement plan (Just Culture) to replace traditional progressive discipline approach. Helped Akron Zoo achieve perfect score on 2020 AZA accreditation (only third zoo to attain perfect rating over 50-year span) by overseeing animal care department. Developed comprehensive, detail-oriented safety programs, Institutional Collection Plan, and overall policies and procedures. Co-created Zoo’s inaugural 10-year conservation strategic plan by serving as Animal Care Department representative, as part of 5-member team. Achieved ratification from Zoo’s Board of Directors in 2022. o Launched North American Songbird conservation program as part of strategic conservation plan. Served on AZA North American Songbird SAFE Steering Committee, and Steering Committee of Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative. o Implemented conservation program \"Lights Out Akron\" that works with local stakeholders to conserve North American Songbirds. Co-established Zoo’s 10-year master plan as Animal Care Department’s representative. Plan includes $30M expansion including goals, timelines, and deadlines for assessments of existing infrastructure, renovations, and planned construction for new exhibits.
