ABOUT SHANE SENÉCAL-TREMBLAY
I am a senior sustainability expert at PowerCo, Volkswagen AG’s battery cell manufacturer, where I lead the responsible sourcing of our EV battery metal value chain. A market-entry and mining M&A expert, I advise on above-ground risk strategies for acquiring and operating mining assets in complex jurisdictions. I am a seasoned negotiator and issues manager across the EV raw material supply chain, negotiating on sustainability provisions and managing raw material suppliers (mines, refiners, traders), working with government officials on strategic public affairs issues, and with other stakeholders including local communities, NGOs, media, and investors. I bring a decade of global, cross-sectoral experience, including roles as raw material lead for cobalt and nickel at Volkswagen AG, global government relations manager at Kinross Gold, and international affairs advisor on human rights, climate, and economic development at the United Nations and OECD. I am also a founding partner of Atlas Risk Group, a geopolitical risk advisory firm. I actively contribute to global industry initiatives and on-the-ground projects including the IRMA Mining Assurance Standard, VW-led Indonesia Nickel Project, Responsible Minerals Initiative, DRIVE Sustainability, IndustriALL, Mining Association of Canada, Canadian Council for the Americas, and the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Council. I hold a Master of Public Policy from the Munk School at the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University. I completed my masters degree with studies at Sciences Po’s Paris School of International Affairs and with a global fellowship with Duke University in Geneva, Switerland. A passionate educator, I teach a professional development course on government relations and political risk at the University of Toronto. I also supported my alma matter at Queen\'s University serving as President of the Alumni Association in France and have given numerous guest lectures at Canadian universities. A native English and French speaker, with B2 upper-intermediate Italian. A published writer, my commentary on international affairs, politics, business, sports and culture has appeared in the Toronto Star, The Spectator and iPolitics.
