ABOUT SHANE MCLORRAIN
I help high-agency investors, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and institutional decision-makers anticipate geopolitical and economic inflection points before they hit the headlines. As founder of Capital Matters Geopolitical Insights, I developed State of Nature 2.0 (SoN2), a proprietary framework that maps how legitimacy, perception, and systemic constraint shape global behavior. It makes sense of a world where the competitive dynamics of the Liberal International Order are no longer shaped solely by world-leading nations, but are also a function of leverage-maximizing Middle Powers. I focus not on chasing signals but on understanding the systems that produce them. SoN2 helps me identify how foreign policy, economic shifts and institutional fragility emerge from deeper consumption dynamics and cultural structures - and it has enabled me to accurately forecast political, technological, and economic inflection points months ahead of the legacy consultancies. Background After earning a Masters at LSE, I joined The Center for Critical Democracy Studies as an analyst. Concurrently, I built the Tocqueville 21 podcast and newsletter into platforms for elite-level geopolitical dialogue, interviewing notables such as Peter Zeihan and Adam Ni. I have given presentations on diverse topics ranging from European energy dynamics to the Russian-Ukraine war, and been published in journals such as International Affairs. My analyses on the trajectory of the U.S. dollar, the impact of U.S. consumer debt on inflation, and populism in Europe were contrarian when published but have been proven highly accurate. My work on the French elections was lauded by Art Goldhammer and earned me multiple guest appearances on leading strategy podcasts, including Jacob L. Shapiro’s. I founded Capital Matters in 2022, producing hundreds of shorts democratizing high-level geopolitical analysis for an audience of young investors and global citizens. Capital Matters Geopolitical Insights brings this analysis to business/institutional decision-makers and international stakeholders who want to move upstream of consensus.
