ABOUT SHANE MCKENZIE
I am a partner at Horvitz & Levy, an appellate boutique in Los Angeles. I have extensive experience in both trials and appeals, serving as counsel in complex tort and business matters in diverse practice areas, including consumer, employment, medical malpractice, partnership, personal injury, products liability, and insurance litigation, as well as providing pro bono appellate advocacy.I have particular expertise in appellate and post trial motion practice in tort cases involving civil penalties and punitive damages. I have joined trial teams to successfully defend large corporations in products liability, consumer disputes, insurance, and general negligence and fraud suits, both during trial and post trial proceedings, and have been lead appellate counsel defending those judgments on appeal. My appellate experience includes diverse practice areas from subrogation, to premises liability, to medical malpractice defense. For example, I succeeded in reversing a judgment relating to a partnership dispute on appeal and then obtaining a dismissal of review in the California Supreme Court in the same matter. I also have recent published appellate victories in medical malpractice and consumer warranty appeals. I currently serve on the State Appellate Judicial Evaluation Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, a group that assists the governor in evaluating possible nominees to the California Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. I was a 2018 Fellow of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD), an organization designed to help a new and more diverse generation of attorneys ascend to positions of leadership. I am a contributing author to “Litigating And Judging California Business Entity Governance Disputes,” a treatise published by LexisNexis, and Verdict Magazine, published by the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel. I was also selected by Super Lawyers as a top-rated appellate attorney specializing in civil defense litigation. Before joining the firm, I practiced as a litigation associate at Quinn Emanuel LLP. Between college and law school, I received a masters degree at the London School of Economics. During my undergraduate years at USC, I was a member of the Trojan Debate Squad.
