ABOUT SHAMEL ADDAS
I am an Associate Professor of Digital Technology at Smith School of Business, Queen’s University, and recently took on the role of Associate Dean, Research. Since joining Smith in 2016 as an Assistant Professor, I was named a Distinguished Research Fellow in 2018 and promoted to Associate Professor (with tenure) in 2020. My academic journey also includes time as an Assistant Professor of MIS at IÉSEG School of Management in France. My teaching spans undergraduate, MSc, PhD, Professional Master’s, and executive programs, with a focus on demystifying digital technology, analytics, and AI for managers and leaders. At the core of my research is a deep exploration of how digital technology is reshaping organizational work and decision-making. My current focus is on human-AI interaction—specifically, how conversational and agentic AI systems influence trust, reliance, and delegation, and the subsequent behavioral outcomes. I also maintain a parallel stream of research on the \"dark side\" of technology, examining phenomena like technology interruptions, addiction, and social media disinformation, as well as the implications of digital tech in high-stakes fields like healthcare.Methodologically, I draw from a diverse toolkit, including experimental designs, survey research, mixed methods, and data-driven techniques. This work has been published in top-tier journals such as MIS Quarterly, MIT Sloan Management Review, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, among others. I regularly present my findings at international conferences and have been honored with several teaching and research awards, including multiple Best Paper Awards. My academic foundation was built at McGill University, where I earned my PhD in 2013. I also hold an MBA from the John Molson School of Business and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the American University in Cairo. Prior to my academic career, I gained valuable industry experience in consulting, customer service, operations management, quality assurance, and production planning.I am always eager to connect and explore opportunities for collaboration at the intersection of AI, work, and organizational impact.
