ABOUT SHAHAB EDIN NODEHI
I\'m a Senior R&D engineer translating robotics and mechatronics into validated medical devices, from soft robotic capsule endoscopes to implantable artificial pancreas.Currently at the University of Dundee, I work on system-level development of SOFTIE (Small Bowel Soft Robotic Motile Enteroscope) under the supervision of Prof. Sir Alfred Cuschieri, a Wellcome-funded intrinsically motile soft robotic platform for early detection of small-bowel disease. I\'m also Co-Investigator on a £2M EPSRC research proposal introducing biocompatible chemiluminescent illumination as a thermally safe alternative to LED light sources in retained capsule endoscopes. Before Dundee, I was Project Manager of the EU Horizon 2020 \"Forget Diabetes\" consortium at Scuola Superiore Sant\'Anna, coordinating industrial and academic partners across Italy, the Netherlands, France, and Germany to deliver a fully-implantable bionic artificial pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes. I designed the implantable hardware, which was subsequently validated in vivo in six 7-day diabetic-pig implants (TRL 6) with demonstrated glucose control and refilling-cycle function. My role spanned mechanical architecture, V&V, technical documentation aligned with ISO 13485, and direct interface with industrial partners on regulatory and integration challenges. My doctoral work at the University of Genova focused on hybrid locomotion for ground mobile robots in uneven and unstructured environments. I designed and built five robot platforms - WheTLHLoc 1 & 2, SnakeTrack, Porcospino, and Porcospino Flex - published in ASME, Robotica, and Machines, and featured by Wevolver and Interesting Engineering. What I bring: Full-stack mechatronics design, from CAD and electronics to embedded control and benchtop V&V. Hands-on regulatory exposure: ISO 13485 QMS, ISO 14971 risk management, ISO 10993 biocompatibility, and design controls through implantable-device development. Project management of multi-country industrial-academic consortia, with direct interfacing on contracting, integration, and verification activities. Strong IP track record: named inventor on 8 patent registrations across automotive, additive manufacturing, fluidics, and sensing. Research credibility: 20+ peer-reviewed publications, 50+ peer-review activities, and invited talks at RAAD (2022) and EAES Athens (2026).Open to conversations about surgical robotics, capsule endoscopy, implantable devices, mobile robotics, and translational mechatronics.
