   My team designs and builds algorithms for auctions which are used to place ads in Amazon search results and on product detail pages. We’re responsible for determining how many ads to place on the page, where to place them, which ads to show and how to price them. We do this billions of times per day across millions of unique contexts and millions of unique ads. We have to consider a number of factors including advertiser performance, shopper satisfaction and short-term and long-term profitability to Amazon’s advertising and retail businesses. Doing this effectively relies on a combination of traditional machine learning techniques, combinatorial optimization algorithms, high-performance engineering and economic theory.
