About Shabel Castro
I am a Staff Attorney at the Innocence Project, where I work on post-conviction cases across multiple jurisdictions, supporting factual reinvestigations, legal strategy, and litigation on behalf of individuals who have been wrongfully convicted. Previously, I served as a Staff Attorney at Brooklyn Defender Services, representing detained and non-detained noncitizens in complex immigration removal proceedings at the intersection of criminal and immigration law.I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where I was a Toll Public Interest Scholar, Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice, and the William E. Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College (CUNY). In addition to my legal work, I engage in creative writing that explores migration, identity, community secrets, and the moral ambiguities of justice, shaped by my family’s history and South Bronx upbringing. I am deeply committed to mentorship, cultivating literary spaces, and community-based advocacy, and I am bilingual in English and Spanish.
