ABOUT SEZIN ADAY AYDIN
I am a translational bioengineer focused on developing advanced in vitro platforms that improve how therapies and environmental exposures are studied and evaluated. With over 20 years of experience in biomedical research and nearly a decade at institutions including Harvard, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania, I work at the intersection of engineering, biology, and translational science to build experimental systems that better capture human physiology and disease. My work integrates microphysiological systems, barrier biology, and drug delivery. I develop high-throughput assays, organoid and organ-on-chip platforms, and engineered tissue models that enable mechanistic studies of disease, toxicity, and therapeutic response. My research includes the first stable hematopoietic stem cell-derived human blood-brain barrier model demonstrating quantitative correlation with human transport metrics, as well as contributions to translational stroke research that advanced to the STROKE34 Phase II clinical program. I have also developed bioinspired extracellular vesicle delivery systems and high-throughput screening approaches to identify regulators of regenerative signaling. At the University of Pennsylvania, I manage a multi-institutional BARDA-funded program developing vascularized lung-on-chip systems to model chemical inhalation injury and identify biomarkers and countermeasures.I also work on technology translation and consulting with biotech and pharmaceutical partners, supporting the evaluation and development of emerging biomedical technologies.Beyond research, I mentor students and early-career professionals across science and consulting pathways and contribute to initiatives that expand diversity, equity, and participation in STEM.
