About Seun Afolayan
As a chemoproteomics researcher with an academic background in Cellular & Molecular Biology, I am excited to immerse myself into the fields of healthcare and biotech through understanding the fields of drug development, medical diagnostics and patient care with the ambition to be a physician-scientist. I am committed to contributing to a hard-working team here at Belharra Therapeutics and strive for excellence in science for current and future patients experiencing unmet needs. My research experiences and passion for cutting-edge science have equipped me to embark on an exciting journey at Belharra Therapeutics, where I serve as a Research Associate in the proteomics team. Here, I work closely with analytical instrumentation, proteomics software and advanced data analysis to investigate the binding of our proprietary chemical probes in novel pockets of hard-to-drug proteins that cause devastating diseases. In my undergraduate research fellowship under Dr. Steve Julio, I conducted independent research focusing on the bacterial genetics of Bordetella bronchiseptica and its virulence mechanisms using a variety of molecular biology techniques such as β-galactosidase assays, SDS-PAGE gels, Western Blots, RT-qPCR, Gel Electrophoresis, DNA primer design, single-nucleotide mutagenesis protocols, RNA isolation, plasmid isolation and in vivo studies. With these techniques, I did a deep dive into understanding the genetic activity of Bordetella’s by mutating genes regulated by the plrS and plrR two-component systems (also known as the “master regulator systems) and characterizing their role in virulence. Furthermore, I have worked as a Research Analyst at Serpass Biologics, a start-up biotech company based in Arizona that spun-out of the Arizona State University lab of Dr. Alex Lucas. Through this experience, I have collaborated with the founder, Dr. Steven Potts, in analyzing and understanding opthalmalogical diseases by analyzing protein expression to determine the appropriate physiological pathways that will maximize therapeutic efficacy of a developing novel protein inhibitor.
