Aerial Dance Project with Disabled Dancers
Aug 2013 — Present · London and Newbury, GB
I am a creative consultant and physical coach for an amazing group of people led by Mel Stevens. Mel Stephens was a professional dancer when she suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury. After spending 10 years in a wheelchair she discovered aerials through the Paralympic Aerial Legacy Intensive program where she got to perform as an aerial dancer. After that experience through which she realized the could still be a gifted mover despite the limited use of her lower limbs, Mel continues that work with her own company called AIM to FLY. I worked with Mel in a PALI training course and now work closely with her to create this fledgling company whose goal is to perform around England and share the physical and emotional benefit of aerial work with the disabled and able bodied communities. We work with many different disabilities and have found that through the strengthening of aerial work the body regains some of its abilities. For those who may not be able to stand or dance or see on the ground, on aerial apparatus they can fly and be amazing.
