ABOUT SERENA FERNANDEZ
I am an accomplished scientist with 7 years of experience in cancer biology and strong technical expertise in cell and molecular biology. I have worked in laboratories in the UK and Italy, leading to successful projects, resulting in several scientific publications.My work so far has been studying the molecular basis of cancer; specialising in the field of microRNAs, a class of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression, and their role in cancer progression, during my PhD and postdoctoral work. I have successfully trained and mentored staff and students, planned and managed multiple research projects and been involved in cross-discipline collaborations, including the experimental validation of a novel microRNA target prediction software: CoMeTa. Other than the science, I love travelling to places slightly off the beaten track and immersing myself in different cultures; especially after living in Italy for nearly 5 years. I love meeting new people and discussing ideas.
