About Ranjan Sengupta
I am a scientist and an educator with a multidisciplinary background spanning academia, government, and biotech industry. Primarily a virologist fascinated with replicative mechanisms in RNA viruses affecting all kingdoms of life, I have a deep interest in utilizing these virus-employed primitive and evolution-tested molecular hacks for designing RNA based vaccines and therapeutics. My experience in virology spans diverse RNA virus families, including alpha, flavi, corona, filo, hantaviruses.I’m also a microscopist both by necessity and passion. My work on virus–host interactions required a deep command of diverse modalities of cellular and tissue imaging approaches, and I’ve spent much of the past decade advancing and developing electron microscopy/light microscopy methods and tools to investigate virus cell biology. Because these tools are just as powerful in broader cell biology, they have pulled my work into therapeutic areas including cancer (Angiex Inc.) aging (NIA) and deafness (NIDCD). During my journey into methods innovation I stumbled upon the world of patent laws and regulations. I am actively expanding my expertise to integrate patent and regulatory knowledge with bench-level innovation and leadership.I am a passionate teacher and an educator. My experience in academia, industry and the government equips me with the necessary information to help my students translate their passions into fulfilling and sustainable careers. I have deep interest in pedagogy and curriculum design and work with researchers in the field to bridge the gap between school books and cutting edge science that save lives.
