ABOUT SÉBASTIEN PIERRE

I have spent the last 20 years working at the intersection of data, technology and people. My core experience is in designing and leading innovative data-centric software projects from concept to delivery, working with multidisciplinary teams towards a common end-goal. Originally from France, I have Masters degrees in both Software Engineering and Computer Science and a Bachelor degree in Design. Following internships in Switzerland and Vancouver, I moved to Canada in 2005, and shortly thereafter founded an award-winning data visualisation agency called FFunction. As one of the first companies worldwide to specialise in data visualisation, we helped pioneer the discipline and develop best practices for using data to communicate ideas and insights. Our clients included The World Bank, UNESCO, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, 3M, Deloitte, Google and HP. In 2019, I moved to Wellington and joined the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to build a cloud-first data platform and help the Bank realise its vision to become more data-driven. In 2020, I joined the New Zealand Stock Exchange to drive its digital transformation. My high-level goal has been consistent throughout my career: I want to help organisations make the most of their data. For me, technology is a tool that supports organisational transformation, but it needs design thinking, a future-proof vision, great communication and a clear roadmap to deliver on its promise.
