About Sean Young

I\'m a scientist, innovator/entrepreneur, and medical school and information and computer science professor (split appointment). I\'m also the author of the #1 Wall Street Journal and international bestselling book, Stick with It (HarperCollins), on the science behind how to make lasting behavioral change. I help people, patients, and businesses make lasting changes in their lives and work. I study the science behind human behavior, and how technologies can be used to change and predict behaviors (see predictiontechnology.ucla.edu and digitalbehavior.ucla.edu for more info about these fields of research). My work as a medical school professor focuses on changing and predicting health behaviors and disease outbreaks using mobile technologies and big data. We study how to solve these problems at the behavioral level, BEFORE they actually occur. I also organize and educate about hackathons/ways to crowdsource public engagement in health, including Chairing UCIPT\'s annual,\"The Opioid Hackathon,\" a 24-hour hackathon designed to create implementable solutions to address the opioid crisis. http://predictiontechnology.ucla.edu/events/the-opioid-hackathon-2018/For more info or to contact me:

Experience

  1. Executive Director

    Uc Institute For Prediction Technology

    Jan 2015 — Present

I was funded and appointed by UC President Janet Napolitano, to create the University of California Institute for Prediction Technology (UCIPT). UCIPT is the first and only academic institution studying how social data can predict and address important real world events like outbreaks of disease, crime, online/cyber safety, and national security.Every day, there are billions of data points from social data like social media, wearable devices, and online search data. These data carry psychological information that can be used to predict people\'s behaviors and global events. We have brought together the world\'s leading experts across big data engineering, computer science and machine learning, and psychology. We are building technologies to predict and solve the world\'s most important problems, before they occur. We have support from government, foundations, and companies ranging from small start-ups to industry giants like Facebook and Intel. We welcome your help and involvement. See predictiontechonlogy.ucla.edu for more information and to get involved.
