About Sean Koon

I am interested in understanding how Generative AI can best be used to to refine and enhance human capabilities rather than replace them.A primary mission of my career has been to train people to become experts. While the majority of this has been through curriculum development and training of practicing physicians, it also includes the training and mentorship of fellows, resident physicians, and others in topics of clinical reasoning, communication, innovation, and leadership. Patients as well can become experts in their condition and I have had innumerable sessions of group and individual teaching of patients towards this aim. Leadership roles for me have included Department Chair, Conference Chair, Workshop Chair, and many roles in committees and teams that were leading educational or organizational missions. In these roles, I\'ve enjoyed many opportunities where collaborative problem-solving could substitute for top-down decision-making. As GenAI transforms our world, I believe there are critical opportunities to develop new forms of literacy that connect generational knowledge with modern tools and that can extend the capabilities of many through an emphasis on rapid learning of essential skills and vs. a primary emphasis on memorization or information retrieval.
