About Sean Coutain
Over the course of my legal career, criminal defense has remained the most engaging and personally meaningful work I have undertaken. My interest in trial advocacy began at Harvard Law School’s Criminal Justice Institute under the direction of Professor Charles Ogletree. It was there that I first felt the profound responsibility of representing individuals whose liberty is at stake. That experience, along with observing the unwavering dedication of criminal defense attorneys to protecting constitutional rights, played a defining role in shaping my career.I began my practice focusing on white-collar defense and internal investigations at Proskauer Rose and Skadden Arps. Those firms provided invaluable experience in handling complex regulatory matters, corporate investigations and high-stakes federal criminal cases. However, it was during my subsequent work as a public defender in San Jose, Honolulu, and Seattle that I gained the deepest appreciation for the human dimension of legal advocacy. Representing indigent clients facing serious charges and life-altering consequences reinforced my belief in the essential role of criminal defense in maintaining the integrity of the justice system.These professional experiences led to the founding of Seattle Defense, a boutique law firm dedicated to providing high-caliber representation in criminal and regulatory matters. My practice is guided by the principles I have carried throughout my career: meticulous preparation, sound judgment, and a commitment to excellence.
