SKILLS
ABOUT SEAN WINTERBURN
Target roles: Head of ESG, Director Environment, Head of HSSE, Chief Sustainability Officer, or equivalent sustainability and risk leadership roles in mining and critical minerals.I help mining, resources, and energy companies keep critical projects and operations moving by stabilising regulatory, community, and investor confidence where it is fragile or at risk. My work sits at the intersection of ESG, environment, HSSE, permitting, and stakeholder trust - the places where momentum is most easily lost and hardest to rebuild.I am typically brought in when projects are technically compliant but functionally fragile, and where permitting risk, ESG exposure, environmental performance gaps, safety concerns, or stakeholder pressure threaten decisions, timelines, or legitimacy. I operate comfortably as an embedded executive or through senior, independent intervention where immediacy, discretion, and credibility are required.Across three decades in mining, metals, and energy, including two decades with Rio Tinto and South32, I’ve worked across Australia, the Americas, India, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Much of this has been in politically sensitive or community‑challenged settings where ESG governance, environmental assurance, and social licence are under intense scrutiny and confidence cannot be assumed. What I’m known for• Project, permitting & momentum stabilisation Identifying trust, ESG, and delivery risk ahead of approvals, financing, or critical decision points, and putting in place the minimum actions required to proceed with confidence.• Regulatory, ESG & stakeholder defensibility Strengthening approvals, commitments, environmental governance, and engagement approaches so they withstand scrutiny from regulators, communities, NGOs, and investors.• Operational follow‑through Aligning ESG, environmental, and HSSE commitments with what teams can realistically deliver, reducing credibility gaps, execution risk, and exposure.Current focusI am actively open to senior, permanent leadership roles where ESG strategy, environmental performance, HSSE leadership, permitting outcomes, or stakeholder trust are central to organisational success.Alongside this, I have established Sandhurst Sustainability to support organisations requiring short‑term, senior intervention or independent assurance. This complements, rather than replaces, my interest in an embedded leadership role.
