ABOUT SEAN SMYTH

I provide senior strategic litigation and arbitration counsel to companies across Canada and around the globe. A member of the Law Society of Alberta (1994) and the Law Society (England and Wales)(1997). Appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2016. Ranked as a leader in Dispute Resolution by Chambers Global since 2011, repeatedly recommended for class actions defence in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory since 2013, named one of the Best Lawyers in Canada since 2015 in class actions and corporate commercial litigation, and named a \"Litigation Star\" by Benchmark Canada since 2016 in arbitration, commercial litigation, product liability and securities litigation. As an advocate in contentious matters, I have appeared before all levels of court in Alberta and Saskatchewan, the superior courts of Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada. I have also appeared before numerous regulatory, disciplinary and arbitral tribunals. My areas of expertise include: litigation project management, corporate commercial litigation and arbitration internationally and domestically, class actions involving securities and product liability, construction litigation including claims against suppliers to major projects, and claims involving contract, tort and equitable obligations and statutory interpretation. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb.), the ADR Institute of Canada and the ADR Institute of Alberta. I am frequently called upon to give advice to clients on constitutional matters, commercial and m&a transactions, contract negotiations, and transactions requiring court approval. I am passionate about mental fitness in the workplace, and am an advocate for diversity and inclusion at our firm.
