FEEDING OUR MENTAL HEALTH-This 3.5 hour course taught twice a year at the Howie the Harp Advocacy Center is designed to assist the next generation of mental health advocates in their future work in the field. It is made up of three comprehensive units. The first, HISTORY OF FOOD JUSTICE gives an overview of the Food Justice Movement how it intersects with other social justice movements and how it intersects with the Mental Health Peer Movement. The second unit FOOD AS MEDICINE, provides an overview of how the food choices we make directly affects not only our physical but also our mental wellness through showcasing the latest research. And the third unit SHOPPING AND BUDGETING FOR HEALTHIER EATING provides insight on how marketing research created an unhealthy supermarket experience for consumers and how to avoid these traps while providing a series of tips for shopping on a tight budget. In 2024, I was invited to add a second workshop based on a chapter from my book “The Compassionate Path” on the importance of strategic career planning entering the mental health peer advocacy workforce. This 3.5 hour course is called THE IMPORTANCE OF STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING: FROM LIVED EXPERIENCES TO LIVED EXPERTISE and is also offered two cycles a year.
