ABOUT SCOTT SUTTON

I am a newly minted SOC Analyst, having recently commenced my cybersecurity career as a defensive security practitioner.I studied cybersecurity over 18 months with Learning People and gained the CompTIA certifications A+, Network +, Security+, and CySA+. This gave me a good basis of knowledge in securing networks and defending them, log analysis, incident response, risk management, threat analysis and cloud security.In between studying for the certs, I worked on my offensive and defensive practical skills with various online platforms like RangeForce, Practice Labs and TryHackMe, gaining practical experience of SOC tools such as SIEM systems, protocol analysers, network scanners, vulnerability scanners, web application scanners and proxies, and network monitors among others, as well as offensive tools like Metasploit.I follow various blogs, listen to podcasts and watch training videos on YouTube to keep upskilling and stay current with the latest news. I also have my own blog.I feel that I now have a strong mix of knowledge and practical skills, and I\'m eager to apply it to my first SOC Analyst role. Long-term I think I will enjoy DFIR, but I am keeping an open mind.My previous career was at the RAC in a customer services environment where I worked for 20 years, first as a call taker, and part-time trainer, then Deputy Team Leader followed by a spell as System Administrator and 6 months in a Process Analyst role, before moving on to a few different supervisory and managerial positions. I was good at it and I enjoyed many aspects of it, but it wasn\'t fulfilling, so when the opportunity came to make a change, I jumped at the chance.Along the way I learnt many skills that I hope to transfer to a career in cybersecurity, such as leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking, a keen eye for detail, time-management, organisation and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.Before I started studying cybersecurity, I used to bake a lot (I make the best pizza, ask my wife), play a lot of strategy games - anybody know Gloomhaven- and listen to and watch musical theatre. Not too many hobbies though, because there are a couple of little monsters who live with me.
