About Scott Malcomson
Whether in journalism, government, think tanks, the private sector or NGOs — as an author, reporter, editor, executive, government official or consultant — I have been focused on the dynamics of national and international systems. Those dynamics can be technological, commercial, political or ideological. I have worked throughout Europe, in Africa and the Middle East, Asia, and North and South America, in several languages. My first love was journalism, initially of the countercultural kind (at the Village Voice from 1984 to 1997) then the other kind (nearly a decade, in two stints, at the New York Times and a wonderful period freelancing for The New Yorker). Since 2015 my writing and advisory work has focused mainly on technology, trade and geopolitics. My most cherished achievements are my books: Tuturani: A Political Journey in the Pacific Islands (1990), Empire’s Edge: Travels in Southeastern Europe, Turkey and Central Asia (1994), One Drop of Blood: The American Misadventure of Race Generation’s End: A Personal Memoir of American Power after 9/11 (2010), and Splinternet: How Geopolitics and Commerce Are Fragmenting the World Wide Web (2016). They are closely followed by working my way through college (University of California, Berkeley, BA, high honors, history) and graduate school (Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, MA, international relations; University of Cambridge, PhD, history).
