About Scott Halbreiner

I stand at the intersection of clinical medicine, technology, and innovation—a unique vantage point that reveals both the promise and the pain points of modern healthcare. As a practicing cardiac surgeon and Director of the Aortic Disease Center at Allegheny Health Network, I\'ve spent ten years on the front lines of life-or-death decision-making. Every day, I rely on electronic health records to guide treatment, coordinate care, and document outcomes. But I\'ve also witnessed firsthand how poorly designed EHR systems contribute to physician burnout, erroneous data capture, financial errors, operational voids and even treatment mistakes. This isn\'t just about efficiency—it\'s about patient safety and physician wellbeing. My journey to healthcare technology began long before medical school. But even today I help oversee major technology integrations including our Epic EHR implementation. I hold multiple Epic certifications in frontend workflow development, backend coding (Mumps), and SQL database querying. Currently completing my Master\'s in Data Science at the University of Pittsburgh and personal background in backend development, I continue to deepen my ability to transform healthcare data into actionable insights. The real catalyst for my work in healthcare technology came from exhaustion—my own and my colleagues\'. I\'ve experienced the 2 AM documentation sessions, the frustration of duplicative data entry, the anxiety when the EHR suggests treatments based on incorrectly captured data. I\'ve seen talented physicians leave medicine because the technology meant to help them became a burden instead.I envision a future where healthcare technology is accurate, well-governed, and designed with usability as the top priority. Where EHR systems enhance clinical decision-making rather than impede it. Where physicians spend their cognitive energy on patient care, not on fighting with software. My unique position—surgeon, engineer, data scientist, and IT leader—gives me the perspective to see what\'s broken and the skills to build something better. I understand the clinical workflows because I live them. I understand the backend architecture because I code in it. I understand the data science because I use it daily. And I understand the urgency because I feel it every single day.I\'m passionate about collaborating with others who share this vision. Whether you\'re building healthcare technology, investing in digital health, or simply frustrated with the status quo, let\'s connect. The future of healthcare depends on getting this right.
