Jack of all trades, master of none”We regularly hear this phrase as a put down, but the full saying resolves in a rhyming couplet: “…but often times better than a master of one.”At 16, I worked in a gastro pub. During my first shift, I meticulously set tables for the evening service, I was delighted with the excellent job I thought I’d done. To my surprise, the manager walked me around the room, pointing out misaligned knives, napkins, and missing glasses. “It’s only a pub,” I thought. But the manager explained that these small details set the tone for the entire evening. Well-aligned cutlery signaled that we cared about the restaurant and, by extension, our guests. That experience taught me that pride in our work reflects pride in ourselves.I think getting outside our comfort zone to learn new skills, fail, succeed, and refine is always valuable. And I\'m at my best when I\'m spending time with people that want to share that journey with me. I believe in fostering environments where individuals can flourish, acquire diverse skills, and learn alongside me. I passionately believe that this is a recipe for sustainable success, for myself, my colleagues and my clients. I know that I will never master many of these skills (if any) but in a world obsessed with “bests” and “worsts,” perhaps we need more “masters of none.”If you\'re interested in learning more, connect with me!
