About Scott Atchley

I am a Distinguished R&D Staff Member and Chief Technology Officer for Oak Ridge National Laboratory\'s (ORNL) National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS). NCCS houses several projects and programs including the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF). OLCF operates the US\' first exascale supercomputer, Frontier. NCCS also houses systems for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Air Force Weather Wing (AFW).I am interested in compute, memory, and interconnect technology trends to understand how to optimize existing systems such as Frontier, how to prepare for next generation systems like OLCF-6, and to define requirements for the system that will follow later. My colleagues and I investigate resource heterogeneity within processors, within nodes, and across the system; processor architectures (e.g, CPU, GPU, FPGA, coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays); memory architectures and hierarchies; persistent memory; interconnects (e.g, PCIe, CXL, Gen-Z, InfiniBand, Ethernet); system scheduling; resilience; and system monitoring.I have been very involved in DOE’s Exascale Compute Project. I served as DOE’s Technical Representative for AMD’s FastForward-2 Node Architecture project and for AMD’s PathForward project. I also served as the lead for ECP’s HPCM and Slingshot Test and Evaluation effort.Most recently, I have joined the ORNL Quantum Science Center to investigate hybrid classic+quantum architectures.
