About Scott Skousen
When you watch an aerial fireworks show, you see 20 minutes of beautiful lights blossoming in the sky. But what you don’t see are the hours of grueling setup in the hot sun, the flashlight-powered cleanup in the dark, and the painstaking dedication to safety so everyone can enjoy the show. Putting on professional firework shows is a hobby of mine. A 20-minute show averaging 1 firework per minute requires 1200 shells loaded and ready to go by 9–10 pm. The crew’s day starts early setting up the mortar tubes the fireworks launch from, transitions to carefully preparing the shells in the afternoon heat, and hopefully allows a few minutes for a late dinner after we drop the shells into mortars and wire the fuses to the control board. Once the show starts, we take turns lighting the fireworks and patrolling for fires directly under deadly explosions as glowing embers and fallout rains down on our hardhats and fireproof jackets. As soon as the last shell goes up and the embers die out, we comb the area for unspent shells and other dangers, undo all the day’s work, and fill trash bag after trash bag with pieces of spent fireworks and a mile or more of wire. With a small show and an organized crew, we’re lucky if we’re done by midnight. Law is not unlike being a pyrotechnician–a successful legal transaction requires a high level of care and extensive behind-the-scenes-work: understanding the law, knowing how the law applies to the client’s facts, and putting it all together to serve the client (preparing shells, mortar tubes, wiring); taking care of fires at delivery (lighting and patrolling); and taking care of everything at the end to make sure the client doesn’t have to worry about anything moving forward (cleanup).I bring the same dedication to my career as I do my hobbies. I’m here to put in what it takes to understand clients’ needs within the framework of the law and provide them a quality product and quality service to meet those needs. I am a licensed Utah Attorney making the transition into practicing law. My prior experience includes a 15-year career in electro-mechanical engineering and project management, business, and intellectual property. I am a patented inventor, have assisted with over 50 patent applications and office action responses, and have assisted with 30 expert witness reports for litigation. I have consulted multiple startups, touching on IP and business needs. I am now looking for a position doing patent, IP, or corporate law. I look forward to talking with you about what I can bring to your firm.
