Area Lighting Engineer – Falkirk CouncilApril 2025 – PresentGrangemouth, ScotlandIn my role as Area Lighting Engineer, I’m proud to lead Falkirk Council’s Street Lighting Service, managing all aspects of our public lighting infrastructure. I oversee a dedicated team of engineers, technicians and operatives, delivering safe, energy-efficient, and future-ready lighting solutions across the Falkirk area.I’m responsible for the end-to-end management of our capital and revenue lighting programmes – from project planning and budgeting to delivery and reporting. This includes street lighting, illuminated signage, festive displays, and supporting smart city innovations through data collection and CMS integration.As the service lead, I act as the Council’s technical authority on lighting, ensuring full compliance with national standards like BS 5489 and CDM 2015. I work closely with colleagues across Roads, Planning, Housing and Procurement, and represent the Council in national forums and professional networks, including the ILP, where I also volunteer as an assessor for new members.A key part of my work is driving sustainability – I’m actively leading projects to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, including LED conversion programmes, dimming trials, and exploring the use of cold lay materials to improve reinstatement efficiency.I also champion workforce development, having mentored colleagues through their Engineering Technician applications and promoted upskilling across the team. Creating a culture of high standards, safety, and continuous improvement is central to how I manage the service.
