About Sebastien Coquery
My interest in flow cytometry stemmed from my early experiences during my rotations as a Master’s student at the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research (BIIR) in Dallas where I learned the basics and so much more thanks to the guidance of Elizabeth Trahan. I was fascinated by the ability to not only interrogate a multitude of factors on the surface or within a single cell, but also how the separation of specific cell populations could be used for therapeutic purposes.Following completion of my Master’s degree, I remained at BIIR, where I honed my technical skills on a variety of acquisition and sorting instrumentation, participated in human clinical trials, and trained users. Ultimately, as the manager of the BIIR Flow Cytometry Core Facility, I oversaw the daily functioning of an 8-instrument facility, and mentored 3 junior flow cytometry staff.Looking to expand my knowledge on a broader spectrum of instrumentation, I joined the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at the University of Virginia, under the mentorship of Joanne Lannigan, where I worked on hybrid cytometers such as the ImageStreamX. There, I continued expanding my skillset as well as developed a new area of expertise by creating software applications. These allowed us to track instrument performance over time, monitor instrument usage, and perform automatic compiling of core charges. I had the opportunity to present my work on the quality control program at the CYTO 2012 Conference in Leipzig, Germany.I decided to join Nancy Fisher’s Flow Cytometry Core Facility at UNC Chapel Hill in 2014 as the Technology Manager so I could combine the two elements I enjoy: the multi-faceted technical features of flow cytometry and the managerial aspect. In 2019, I was given the opportunity by Benjamin Daniel to make the switch from academia to industry and join Regeneron Pharmaceuticals where I currently manage a larger team and oversee a bigger fleet of state-of-the-art instruments. My unwavering strategy is to isolate inefficiencies, solve problems, and introduce process improvements in flow cytometry Shared Resource Laboratories all in pursuit of enhancing their performance and productivity. Ultimately, these efforts lead to the best possible research environment for users and staff alike.
