About Sateesh Nori
I am a tenant attorney, legal innovator, and scholar focused on the intersection of law, technology, and access to justice. For more than two decades, I have worked in New York City Housing Court, representing thousands of tenants, supervising litigation teams, and leading advocacy efforts aimed at preventing displacement and homelessness. My career has spanned direct representation, nonprofit leadership, teaching, and policy work, giving me a ground-level understanding of how legal systems operate in practice—and how often they fail the people who rely on them most.I am the author of Sheltered: Twenty Years in Housing Court, a reflection on housing instability, inequality, and the limits of incremental reform within the legal system. I also teach and lecture frequently, challenging law students and practitioners to rethink the role of lawyers in a period of rapid technological and social change. Currently, I serve as Senior Research Fellow in AI and Access to Justice at NYU Law’s Center on Civil Justice and as Chief Legal Futurist at LawDroid, where my work centers on how artificial intelligence can be deployed responsibly to expand access to legal help.A throughline in my work is the belief that justice should not depend on navigating opaque systems or securing scarce professional gatekeepers. I advocate for direct-to-consumer legal tools, thoughtful reform of unauthorized practice rules, and a reorientation of the legal profession around real-world outcomes rather than institutional convenience. Through writing, teaching, and building, I aim to push the law toward a future that is more accessible, humane, and responsive to the lives it is meant to govern.
