Hello, my name is Saron Weldemariam and I am pleased to introduce myself as a fourth-year student at Santa Clara University. As a first-generation student and Eritrean-born individual, I bring a unique perspective and a diverse background to my studies. I am pursuing a double major in Political Science and Sociology, with a minor in International Studies and an emphasis in pre-law.My ultimate goal is to pursue graduate study and a career focused on migration, refugee protection, and social justice. I am passionate about advancing policies and programs that promote dignity, integration, and opportunity for marginalized communities. As a Hackworth Fellow at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, I am developing a replicable middle-school curriculum on refugee and asylum policy designed for 6th–8th grade classrooms. The project focuses on creating age-appropriate, ethically grounded lesson modules that introduce students to the history of asylum, the lived experiences of displaced people, and core legal rights and protections under U.S. and international law. My work involves curriculum design, ethical review, and consultation with educators to ensure the materials are academically effective, adaptable to classroom needs, and responsive to ongoing developments in immigration law.
