About Saramarie Azzun

Saramarie Azzun (she/her) holds ties to both Oklahoma and Kansas and is a graduate of The University of Oklahoma, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology and minor African Studies. Witnessing the profound impact of mental health on socioeconomic status fueled her commitment to medicine and advocacy. Her passion to serve motivated her to attend the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, where she is committed to addressing healthcare disparities and advocating for underserved communities. Through her medical education, she has focused her involvement on service leadership in the greater Oklahoma community and mentorship for those underrepresented in medicine.Currently, Saramarie is a third-year medical student with a strong commitment to advancing health equity through research and advocacy. Her interests span immigrant health, LGBTQ+ health, maternal health, dermatology in skin of color, and the effects of restrictive healthcare policies on medical education and patient outcomes. Through her work, she seeks to address systemic barriers in healthcare and contribute to more inclusive, patient-centered solutions.As a Schweitzer Fellow, Saramarie is implementing a twelve-week nutritional education curriculum with her colleague at Women in Recovery, an intensive alternative program for women facing long prison sentences due to substance use disorders. Through this initiative, she empowers participants to build a healthier relationship with food, navigate food insecurity, and integrate mindful eating practices into their daily lives. Her work reflects her broader commitment to using education and advocacy to drive lasting change in community health.She has student membership affiliations with the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of Pediatric Dermatology, American Medical Association, Student National Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Medicine.
