  1. Lifestyle Enrichment Lead, Memory Care

Dec 2024 — Present · Omaha, NE, US

Believe it or not, my skills and training from working in politics the past two decades (PR, campaigns, etc.) have proven to have countless parallels and useful applicability to my current role working with seniors who have dementia. My official role is to plan group activities, but my position is so much more! Based in our flagship property, The Grand Lodge, you can find me there having an impromptu dance party, sitting with a resident thumbing through family photos, putting up new brightly colored and tactical decorations. Person-centered, I tailor my communication style and even customize activities to how each person’s brain functions, generally based on the kind of dementia someone has, ie. Frontotemporal, Vascular, Early-Stage Alzheimer’s, Late-Stage Alzheimer’s, Parkinson\'s, etc. Wondering why I started this role? I was looking for a career change, foremost because I needed something different in my life, and I wanted to activate my creative side—and then it happened—an “aha moment.” Inspired by both my Grandmothers who had Alzheimer’s (and without any living Grandparents), I wanted to work with seniors. Fast-forward and here I am—I am honored to be in the company of so many amazing human beings (and am surrounded by Grandparents!) who teach me new things each day. So awesome! Together we laugh, we play, we create, WE HAVE FUN. Within the first three days of this position I knew I had found my calling. I absolutely love coming to “work” each day—and who knew my prior career skills would translate so strongly!A final note: I witness these individuals living happy lives—no, people with dementia don’t measure happiness the same way as you and I, but in **moments** of joy. And that’s my goal each and every day: to provide meaningful connection and bright moments.
