ABOUT SARAH QURAISHI
I am a dedicated undergraduate student who has been pursuing a career in healthcare since as early as high school. Truthfully, my interest in medicine started as early as childhood but I gained exposure into the field when I was part of the medical assisting program in high school where we gained everything from hands-on knowledge of vitals to information about medical billing and insurance. This program helped me get my first job at Maimonides Medical Center at their cancer center. This kickstarted my drive to explore all types of medical settings and specialties. I truly feel that a prospective career as a physician is my calling because I believe in quality medical care for all people in addition to being a compassionate and informed healthcare provider. As a POC, I have dedicated time to learning about health disparities in minority groups and even spent time volunteering in Greece at a clinic with an NGO to help make healthcare accessible to the refugee population there. I believe the incorporation of lifestyle changes and prevention of the many chronic diseases that affect the American population is key in medicine which is why I chose to major in Exercise Science at Rutgers-New Brunswick, where I have been learning the many benefits that exercise can have on every demographic. This is why my goal is to become a physician with an emphasis on prevention because I feel this added layer of holistic treatment and alternative medicine benefits our population more than conventional medicine that just focuses on singular ailments or just mere cure rather than prevention or education. I also have always had an interest in Psychology and Psychiatry which is why I chose this as my minor because in addition to lifestyle changes, mental health and the elimination of stigma is extremely pertinent. As a pre-medical student, I have spent my free time learning effective patient interaction by shadowing various medical disciplines like oncology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, gynecology, internal medicine, and pediatrics. I have also learned a variety of clinical skills and terminology working in these setting like performing vitals, EKG,and pharmacological knowledge. These days, I have a newfound interest in research and have been studying sleep patterns in college students at Rutgers Sleep Lab. I am open to finding more research opportunities to build upon the skills that I am currently acquiring and expanding my horizons to study even more complex health related disciplines, whether with human subjects, macro-scale or micro-scale.
