About Sarah Langston
Aerospace engineer working as a research engineer in the Configuration Aerodynamics Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. Research involves applied and experimental aerodynamics of air and space craft. First 7 years at NASA Langley were spent in the Structural Mechanics and Concepts Branch. Work included structural and thermal analysis of space structures, specifically the use of hot structures for vehicles leaving low Earth orbit. Graduated in June 2015 with a MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics with a focus in Structures and a thesis in Aircraft Design. Thesis investigated the stability and control of a scaled R-UAV version of a supersonic business jet. The aircraft used novel lateral-directional control devices in order to reduce non-lifting surfaces.
Experience
Research Aerospace Engineer
Jan 2017 — Present
Current role is in the Configuration Aerodynamics Branch where current research focuses on applied and experimental aerodynamics via wind tunnel and flight testing of air and space craft.Current projects include supporting the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the X-59 Quesst Flight Demonstrator, the high lift common research model (CRM-HL), and multiple other advanced aircraft designs.Primary role from January 2017 to May 2022 was a thermal and structural analyst and experimentalist working primarily on space vehicles in the Structural Mechanics and Concepts Branch.Projects included: Analysis and test support for a 3-D woven thermal protection system (TPS)Analysis and parametric study for hot structure vehicle concepts for Mars Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL)Analysis and mechanical testing of carbon-carbon compositesTesting and characterization of high temperature fibrous insulations
