About Sarah Barnett

With a passion for helping animals and people, Sarah’s gained unique perspective and experience, launching and managing the social media for the Northern Virginia based Lost Dog and Cat Rescue for many years, working at the national level at the Humane Society of the United States, and then as Director, Development and Communications, for 18 months before becoming the interim Co-Executive Director at ACCT Philly. In January of 2023, she became the executive director of ACCT Philly, which is the largest open intake shelter in the Philadelphia region, taking in animals a year. Prior to joining ACCT Philly, she worked in several communications roles at the Humane Society of the United States, with a focus on public relations, social media, crisis communications, and when they overlap. While managing social media for the Humane Society of the United States, she led the organization to be recognized as a leader in the use of Twitter (X) for nonprofit engagement, and be recognized in industry publications such as “One of the Top 20 Nonprofits on Twitter” by The Huffington Post.She’s a speaker on crisis communications for nonprofits, how to navigate brand attacks in the online space, and how to use social media to communicate effectively no matter the size of your organization or cause.She is also the founder and principal of Social Media for Animals, which is dedicated to supporting those who manage social media for animal shelters or rescues. She co-founded and helps run the Animal Shelter Social Media Facebook group, a community of more than individuals who manage social media at brick and mortar animal shelter or rescue facilities.
