About Sarah Becan

At the University of California, Irvine, I have undertaken a challenging academic curriculum as a chemical engineering major with a materials science engineering minor. In addition to completing the demanding coursework, I have developed interpersonal skills as an active member of several organizations at UC Irvine.As Chem-E-Car Project Manager of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) at UC Irvine, I manage a supervised research project for the design and construction of a shoebox-sized car that is powered by safe chemical reaction energy sources and guided by principles of chemical engineering. I have managed time effectively and functioned well under pressure while directing a team of 20 students throughout the year. Additionally, I assembled a proposal to request funding from UC Irvine’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and was granted a $1660 fellowship, a significant increase from last year’s funding grant of $500. Overall, the Chem-E-Car project incorporates critical thinking, creative problem-solving skills, and process safety awareness.In addition to actively participating in AIChE, I was nominated to join Omega Chi Epsilon (ΩΧΕ, National Honor Society for Chemical Engineers) at UC Irvine based on academic excellence and my position in the top 20% of my chemical engineering class. I have served as both Secretary and Webmaster, and my duties included composing weekly email newsletters to announce upcoming deadlines and events, recording minutes for general and board meetings, and assembling and sending over 80 formal, personalized nomination letters as initiate invitations. I also redesigned the ΩΧΕ website using WordPress in order to improve its navigation, aesthetic appeal, and ease of updating regularly. Finally, I coordinated with the team of board members to assist with the organization of various professional development, social, fundraising, and community service events.
