ABOUT SARAH V. HARLAN

Until 2025, I worked in global health - specifically maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, and family planning. In mid-2025, I pivoted my career to focus on community-level work in my home of Durham, North Carolina. Merging my personal and professional interests, I am now the Development Director at Durham Children\'s Initiative, an organization that builds a more equitable future for children and families in Durham, North Carolina. Over my two-decade career in public health, I have merged creativity with evidence-based knowledge. I am driven by my passion for equitable health care systems and health families/communities. My main areas of programmatic expertise include advocacy, knowledge management, partnership development, storytelling, multi-sectoral approaches, and social and behavior change. I also have a particular interest in the technical areas of gender integration, adolescent/youth engagement, and the inclusion of people with disabilities.A passionate advocate and communicator, I have conducted workshops and produced materials for a range of audiences—including health service providers, donors, journalists, research staff, policy makers, and clients. My work experience spans a variety of geographic settings in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the United States.
