In 2020, the Carter Center determined that its almost 40 years of experience working on democracy and elections reform overseas was unfortunately relevant in the U.S. Working in partnership with cross-partisan networks of civic, business, and religious leaders, we have recently launched an initiative focused on promoting a set of five Candidate Principles for Trusted Elections. These principles were developed by citizens, candidates, and campaign professionals from both sides of the aisle and represent a set of standards that spell out, in a straightforward and nonpartisan way, our understanding of what good elections mean. Now that primary season is almost over, our networks will soon begin taking the principles to candidates at the local, state, and federal levels and asking for their support. Our goal is to get candidates to sign on in pairs, as we believe this is key to demonstrating the nonpartisan nature of committing to free, fair, and secure elections.
