The Opportunity:Reinvigorate the partnerships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous communities through student stewardship. Background:The Enactus teams of Fleming College and Trent University have initiated a project to work with local First Nations to identify and work on issues relevant to these communities. Under direction from Former Chief Emily Whetung of Curve Lake First Nation, the project has been focused on creating a concept for affordable, culturally appropriate housing using sustainable materials and designs. The goal will be to have a model that can be replicated and maintained by local communities. The project was given the name Tikinaagan by the Council of Elders. Objective: Common housing approaches are based on settler models and do not incorporate the spirit of how Indigenous people use their homes. The Enactus teams of Fleming College and Trent University will work alongside First Nation Communities to create a multigenerational home that reflects Indigenous family living. Our goal is to create a home that can be used both on and off reserve, for families and Indigenous post-secondary students.
