Communications Manager, College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences @University of Maryland Baltimore County
Catonsville, MD, US
NEWS WRITING & MEDIA RELATIONS-I find, report, and write content published on UMBC News, UMBC Magazine, EurekAlert, and elsewhere on topics from quantum physics to transfer student success. I am often managing many stories in various stages of development-I pitch UMBC stories to external media and respond to media requests, including connecting UMBC faculty with opportunities on platforms such as The Conversation.TEACHING-I developed and taught Communication for Emerging Scientists, a two-course sequence focused on writing and communication skills for undergraduates seeking STEM careers from 20••••22-I supervised a communications intern Feb 2020 - Dec 2021.DIVERSITY & INCLUSION-From May 2019 – Jan 2021, I advocated for a broad understanding of diversity and inclusion as one of two inaugural Diversity and Inclusion Fellows in the Office of Institutional Advancement. I co-led the division’s D+I Work Group to facilitate the division\'s D+I initiative by organizing trainings, soliciting feedback, communicating progress, and most of all, listening and learning.SERVICE & LEADERSHIP-I served as a Professional Staff Senator 20••••23, and served as the PSS communications officer 2018 – 2019 and co-secretary 2019 – 2020-I chair the university Landscape Stewardship Committee, which successfully advocated for the campus to become a National Wildlife Federation certified wildlife habitat. GRANT WRITING / EVENT COORDINATION-I wrote a grant to host a campus event as part of the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion\'s Engaging Scientists Project. With and UMBC colleagues, I led organization for the event including a workshop for scientists, a tabling session encouraging students to think about the relationship between science and faith, a panel open to the public, and promotion efforts-I am on the lead planning team for a new community engagement event series in UMBC\'s College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences.
