About Sarah-Jayne Smith
Magpies & Peacocks is a non-profit design house dedicated to the collection, curation and creative reuse of waste textiles – creating small batch clothing, accessories and home goods made entirely from material diverted from landfill. The organization collects, sorts and reuses used clothing, textile samples, off cuts, bolt ends, and scrap fabrics in a facility in Houston, creating a large resource library of material available for collaborative design projects, small batch collections and art. Magpies & Peacocks works collaboratively with local designers, makers and artists to up-cycle the material diverted into marketable new products. In addition teaching ethical and sustainable practices to student designers and building a work force network to scale their impact. M & Ps products are a vehicle for an essential message of responsible consumption and circularity in design, with an emphasis on educating on the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
