About Sarah Hobson
I am a Landscape Architect and have built my career in Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso, TX. While I\'ve been in Austin since 2003, my roots are in El Paso, TX where I grew up to appreciate desert, mountain, river, and farm ecologies. After receiving my Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from Texas Tech University\'s College of Agriculture, I was motivated to live and work in central Texas. My first professional opportunity began in 2004 with RVi Planning + Landscape Architecture. For the following four years, I learned from respectable Landscape Architects about park, recreation center, and streetscape design. Our client base was predominantly private sector with some City municipalities in the mix. The industry and our profession were impacted by the recession in 2008 and I was let go from the firm, but thankful for the experience I gained. In the summer of 2008, I found a new position with HNTB. There I learned about public transportation infrastructure aesthetics through US290 reconstruction in Houston, hurricane Ike disaster recovery assessments for the State of Texas, and writing design guidelines for the City of Belton. I also learned about working with Regional Mobility Authorities, TxDOT, Transit Authorities, and other municipalities. The ongoing recession had a second impact on my career when I was let go from HNTB in 2010.I found my next opportunity with Root Design Company as a designer of residential pools and landscapes. This was a design/build firm that catered to high-end properties and delivered elegant and high-quality designs and installations. In my time there I learned about implementing designs through construction. In 2012, my first child was born. I spent a year away from the workforce to focus on raising her. In 2013, I rejoined HNTB. Projects that I contributed to and that contributed to my growth include I-10 Bridge pedestrian safety/lighting/aesthetics updates through downtown El Paso, TX (TxDOT), New Harbor Bridge Design Guidelines (TxDOT), SH71 Design Guidelines (TxDOT), Downtown Station in Austin, TX (CMTA), Blue Line (ATP), US290 35 miles of Green Ribbon landscape design/PS & E (TxDOT), 6 miles of city-wide street landscape and irrigation design (City of El Paso), I-10 Collector Distributor Lanes highway aesthetics in El Paso (TxDOT), BRT transfer center and BRT corridors streetscape in Baton Rouge, LA (MoveBR), Mobility35 shared use path SME (TxDOT), and author of the TxDOT Aesthetics in Design-Build Projects Lessons Learned (TxDOT).
