ABOUT SARAH CASTLE

Sarah Castle is an architect and a co-founding director of IF_DO - a multi award-winning architecture practice based in London and Manchester. Established in 2014, IF_DO is dedicated to creating projects with a positive impact on users, the environment and the surrounding community. Recognised for its innovative and creative approach, IF_DO has been shortlisted for BD Young Architect of the Year 2021, and was included in the Architects’ Journal 40 under 40, 2020. In 2018 IF_DO was named Breakthrough Talent of the Year at the FX Design Awards, and Young Architect of the Year by the American Institute of Architects UK in the same year. Within IF_DO Sarah is leading the design and delivery of numerous community focussed projects – from community hubs and retrofits, to one of the largest pieces of public art in the country. IF_DO\'s approach often involves innovative engagement with communities and other stakeholders, creating architecture that is appropriate to its place, and responsive to the needs of the people that they serve. Her practice has a strong track record of delivering highly engaging social infrastructure projects, and their Brent Cross Substation project was awarded a Civic Trust Award in 2024. Sarah passionately believes in the promotion of a diverse and equal profession, and is driven by a desire to see places and spaces being designed and delivered in a manner that is open, and beneficial to all. She is Creative Director of Part W - an action group of women campaigning for gender parity across the built environment. Sarah graduated from the University of Edinburgh with both an MA (Hons) in architecture and a Master of Architecture with Distinction. She has worked for respected international design offices in New York, Paris and London, including at Lina Ghotmeh Architects in Paris (then Dorrel.Ghotmeh.Tane) where she was a project leader for the National Museum of Estonia. Sarah is a member of the Places Matter northwest design review panel, and has taught at London School of Architecture, and Manchester School of Architecture.
