About Sarah Battle

I am a scholar on Washington Color School artist Kenneth Victor Young. Current scholarship focuses on the painter\'s formative years in Louisville, Kentucky. For the last three years I\'ve pursued an oral history project,\"Painting a Legacy\", to help record Louisville\'s Black modern art scene between the 19••••80 through the support, expertise, and memories of the artists and their families. My interviews are transcribed and made available through the University of Louisville Oral History Center.\"Painting a Legacy\" was the scholarly foundation for a multi-year curatorial initiative at the Speed Art Museum, co-curated with Dr. fari nzinga.

   In preparation of Ed Hamilton’s Studios and Visitor Center multi-year renovation, I’ve been hired to review, research, and organize the paper collections physically housed onsite. Working directly with the nationally renowned Louisville- based sculptor, Ed Hamilton, my inventory of his collection is the first box-level assessment since the studios’ existence in 1978. In consultation with the sculptor, assesses art and archival collections to flag priority conservation and preservation concerns Guided by conversations with colleagues at the University of Louisville’s Special Collections, drafts approach to box-level inventory assessment to EHSVC leadership Organizes, researches, and catalogues Ed Hamilton’s paper collection
