ABOUT SARA VOLK MARTINEZ

A native of Florence, South Carolina, Sara received her Bachelor of Science from Furman University in 2003 in Earth & Environmental Science and was awarded her law degree from the University of South Carolina in 2006. Sara currently serves as Counsel in the Administrative, Government, and Regulatory practice group at Burr & Forman, LLP, where she utilizes her broad range of experience in environmental law, administrative law, real estate development, and civil litigation to provide comprehensive assistance to governmental entities and private companies such as real estate developers, manufacturers, mining companies, and waste companies.Prior to joining Burr & Forman, Sara served as Chief Counsel for Environmental Affairs at the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. In that capacity, she provided legal counsel to executive leadership and senior management on complex environmental issues across all media including air, water, and soil. In addition to litigating on behalf of the Department, she advised on policy, permitting, remediation, compliance, and enforcement. Sara was initially a civil defense litigator representing governmental entities. She also spent the majority of her early career focusing her practice on affordable housing as internal counsel for state agencies in South Carolina and Georgia, with a brief stint in private practice representing developers of multi-family affordable housing. During this time, Sara provided legal advice and services related to housing bond finance, residential mortgage production, and multifamily affordable housing development. Sara is a member of the South Carolina Bar and is admitted to practice before all state courts in South Carolina, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
